Why Newborn Photography in Derbyshire Is Worth It

My honest take as a Derbyshire newborn photographer…

If you’re pregnant right now and looking at newborn photos, I can almost guarantee you’ve had this thought…

Is it actually worth it?

Because when you start looking into a newborn photoshoot in Derbyshire, it can feel like a big decision. Especially when you’re already spending money on what feels like everything for baby.

So I’m going to answer you honestly. Not as a sales pitch. Just as a mum and someone who’s photographed hundreds of babies.

When I had my first baby, everything felt like a blur. I remember the cuddles, the feeds, the tiredness… but I don’t remember it clearly. It all just sort of merged into one.

And now I’ve got a teenager.

I don’t know how that happened so quickly.

This is what most parents say to me

When families come into my home studio, based in the Derbyshire countryside, and Ashbourne – one thing comes up again and again.

“I nearly didn’t book this.”

Or…

“I didn’t do it with my first and I really regret it.”

Not because they feel guilty. Just because they didn’t realise how quickly that stage would pass.

Those first couple of weeks are a bit of a whirlwind. You’re recovering, adjusting, running on very little sleep. Taking photos properly isn’t exactly top priority.

Then suddenly your baby is more awake. Less curled up. Changing every single day.

And that tiny newborn stage you thought would last longer… doesn’t. “But I’ve got loads of photos on my phone”

Of course you have. Everyone does.

And you absolutely should take them.

But here’s the difference I see all the time.

Your phone captures what’s happening day to day and you just don’t get the same print quality to enable you to create amazing wall art for your walls at home.

A professional newborn session captures a moment you’ll never get back again in the same way.

In my studio here near Ashbourne, everything is calm. Warm. Slowed right down and my studio is completely created with new parents in mind.

You’re not trying to grab a quick photo between feeds. You’re not worrying about lighting or angles or whether the house looks okay in the background.

You just get to sit down and breathe for a bit while I take care of everything. It’s just as important to enjoy the experience as well as capture the photos.

This part really matters to me.

Newborn safety isn’t something I take lightly.

It’s not just placing a baby down and taking a photo. Every pose, every position, every little movement is done carefully and with experience.

Your baby leads the session. Always.

If they need feeding, we stop. If they need settling, we take our time. Nothing is rushed.

So when you book a newborn photoshoot with me in my Derbyshire home studio, you’re not just paying for images. You’re trusting someone to handle your baby properly. Someone who is a mum running a small business, someone that cares about every family that comes through the studio doors.

And I never forget that.

I complete training courses in baby safety every single year and this year I have also completed a baby and child first aid course.

You don’t need to have it all together

Most mums walk in and say something like “I feel a bit of a mess today.”

And honestly, that’s exactly how you’re supposed to feel.

You’ve just had a baby.

You don’t need to organise anything, bring loads with you or try to make things perfect.

Everything is ready here for you. You can have a hot drink. Sit down. Switch off for a couple of hours.

Some mums chat the whole time. Some just enjoy the quiet. Some nearly fall asleep.

All of it is completely fine.

And please don’t hide from the camera.

I know it’s tempting to say “just get the baby.”

But one day, your baby will look back at these photos.

And they’ll want to see you in them.

Not posed or forced. Just you, holding them, looking at them, being with them.

Those are always the photos people end up loving the most. Not only that, I’m a mum of three boys, I often feel the lack of sleep, hating the way I look or feel, my arms I don’t like or embracing the rolls that were once home to my growing babies.

But trust me, I will make sure you love these photos of yourself, even your husband will make them his new profile photo.

This is the bit people don’t expect.

Most of the things you buy in that first year don’t last.

Clothes get outgrown almost instantly. Half the things you thought you needed barely get used.

But photos are different. They become more important as time goes on.

Especially when they’re printed and actually in your home, not just sat on your phone with thousands of others.

That’s why I focus so much on creating something you’ll see every day, not just something you scroll past.

So is it worth it?

Honestly, yes.

Not because you need perfect photos.

Not because everyone else is doing it.

But because it’s a special experience for you to remember at the start of your parenthood.
